Does it actually remove bacteria?
Yes. The 2-stage ultrafiltration membrane is rated to remove bacteria at the membrane level — this is different from activated carbon filters that only improve taste and odour. The ultrafiltration membrane physically blocks bacteria and microorganisms from passing through. It does not remove dissolved chemicals like pesticides or heavy metals beyond chlorine — for those, a dedicated chemical treatment is required alongside the filter.
How does the pressurization work?
The body of The Source is compressible. When suction alone is insufficient to pull water through the membrane — typically in cold water or as the filter element loads — you can squeeze the body to push water through instead. This is the same principle as a squeeze filter, combined with the option to use standard suction when it's sufficient. No pump mechanism, no moving parts to break.
How do I clean the filter element?
Remove the filter element from the body and backflush with clean water — run clean water through the outlet end (the end you drink from) in reverse to push accumulated sediment and bacteria back out through the inlet. Do this after every use in heavily contaminated water, or when flow rate decreases noticeably. Allow to air dry completely before storage to prevent mould growth inside the membrane.
What bottles and bags does it connect to?
The bottom thread is designed to fit standard water bottle mouths and common water bag valves. Most standard outdoor water bottles (wide-mouth and standard-mouth) are compatible.
